The original building for Our Lady of the Valley was ravaged by fire in the late 19th Century and was rebuilt on the same foundation, at which time a large and elegant Steere organ was installed. The splendid stained glass windows, featuring brilliant blues, date from the 1950s and 1960s, and are largely the work of the Connick Studios of Boston; some older windows remain in the chancel. In 1971, the pipe organ’s main wind reservoir burst and the instrument became unplayable. Fortunately, the Parish had the foresight to envision a future restoration and refused to sell the pipework.

Over the next seventeen years, during which an electronic instrument was used, funds were raised for the rebuilding of the organ in 1989 by Messrs. Czelusniak et Dugal, Inc. Followed during 1999-2001, the Firm completed Tonal Renovations and enlargement of the organ from 20 to 24 ranks (of old stock from other sources), carefully matched to Steere style, and rearrangement of string ranks (with original scaling and voicing) for Celeste’s on both manuals.

The organ still retains its original character while having 20th century technology in the console. The gentle sound of this instrument is enhanced by the warm acoustics of the church.

The Chapel was dedicated on St. George’s Day, 1908, consecrated on May 16, 1909, and given “to the loyal keeping of the Masters and boys of Pomfret School.”

The Pomfret School Chapel Organ was originally built by George S. Hutchings Organ Company of Boston (opus 1640). Extensive modifications were made in 1962 by the Portsmouth, Rhode Island firm of Welte-Whalon. Further improvements in 1987 included a new three-manual draw-knob console designed and built by the Austin Organ Company of Hartford, Connecticut and extensions of two reed ranks. Messrs. Czelusniak et Dugal, Inc. maintains the instrument and did additional tonal work. Two electronic 32-foot stops were added by the Walker Technical Company of Zionsville, Pennsylvania. In honor of Pomfret School’s Centennial Year, a Festival Trumpet was added in 1993. This stop, modeled after the Harrison festival trumpet at All Saints’ Church, Worcester, Massachusetts, was built by David Broome at The Austin Organ Company.

Edward Ashton Rollins 1828-1885: Benefactor of Faith

Edward A. Rollins was born in Wakefield, NH in 1828. He spent his formative years in Great Falls, NH and entered Dartmouth College at the age of nineteen. Graduating from Dartmouth in 1851, he entered the legal profession in Great Falls and in 1860 was elected to the NH state legislature where he twice served as Speaker of the House. Moving to Washington he accepted the position of cashier in the new Bureau of Internal Revenue in 1863, ultimately becoming its director. Rollins moved to Philadelphia in 1868 as the President of the National Life Insurance Company, and subsequently he became President of Centennial National Bank in whose service he remained for the rest of his life. During this period he took an interest in railroad and other business enterprises, acquiring considerable wealth.

At the same time, Mr. Rollins took his civic and religious responsibilities seriously and was known to employ his wealth generously. He was a member of the Sessions (governing board) of the Walnut Street Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, and his gift of the chapel to his college was not the first of his benefactions. The chapel was erected as a tribute to his father and mother, Daniel G. and Susan Benny Rollins and to his wife, Ellen. Due to illness Mr. Rollins was unable to attend its dedication. However he was present at the first service of Morning Prayer ever held there. Five days later on September 12, 1885, Mr. Rollins died, and was honored at the Chapel’s first memorial service.

An organ was installed in the Chapel in 1887 as a gift from Harold C. Bullard ’84; it was subsequently enlarged by him, and in 1918 parts of that organ were incorporated into a new instrument donated by Frank E. Streeter, LLD ’74, a Dartmouth Trustee. In 1963 the Streeter organ was replaced by the present Austin organ given by Basil F. Austin ’31, a life-long devotee of the design and construction of high-grade pipe organs.

The Hopkins Center, designed by Wallace Harrison, the architect of Lincoln Center and the United Nations Building in New York City, has served as the cultural hub of the Dartmouth College campus in Hanover, NH, since it first opened in November 1962. In 1988 the “Hop” was named by the National Endowment for the Arts as one of the nation’s exemplary performing arts centers, with live performances in virtually all genres of music, theater and dance, film screenings, and other events. The Hop also houses classrooms, studios and other facilities, as well as the offices of the Departments of Music, Theater, Film & Media Studies, and Studio Art.

A portable chamber organ, housed in a handsome paneled case of antiqued cherry with a façade of pure tin diapasons and hand carved acanthus leaves. Keyboard compass C-d’’’, 51 notes, playing at either 415 or 440, easily transposable. The keyboard is high enough to be played comfortably while standing and conducting, yet low enough to allow the player to see the conductor over the music rack whilst seated. All the interior pipework is of Sitka spruce for lightness, durability, and that special late 17th, early 18th century English sound. The scaling and voicing is reminiscent of the work of Smith, Bridge and Snetzler. The Open Diapason commences at tenor f whilst the other four stops divide into treble and bass between middle c and c sharp at 415, b and c at 440. The blower is self-contained and in its own case.

A new wind system was applied to this organ about 1940 by the Morel Brothers, also with some pipework and mechanical changes then. An Oboe rank has been replaced in the Récit division in the present restoration and relocation, also amending for minor errors in the original contract specifications of April 21, 1896.

A Letter from the Vice President of Casavant Frères

I was just thrilled when my good friend Bill Czelusniak informed me that he had found a new home for our Opus 74.

Opus 74 is the oldest surviving Casavant organ in the United States. While it has some “cousins” in its native Quebec, this instrument represents a rare example of mechanical action organs built during the Casavant brothers’ directorship.

This was the 74th commission for a new organ received by Casavant. The original contract was signed on April 22, 1896, by Fr. Napoléon Leclerc, priest-in charge of the Paroisse Sainte-Anne in Woonsocket, RI. The price of the organ, which has 14 stops on two manuals and pedal, was $2,150. It was completed in the church before Christmas 1896. Its current replacement value would be approximately $450,000.

The organ was installed at the Paroisse Sainte-Anne in Woonsocket, RI. The tonal finishing on site was directed by Claver Casavant. Interestingly, the feeder for the large bellows was activated by a hydraulic motor (un moteur hydraulique agissant sur les pompes du soufflet).

The organ was moved to Notre-Dame des Victoires Church in Woonsocket in 1918. It stayed there until 2000, at which time it was returned to its original home, now the St. Ann’s Arts and Cultural Center with the intent of restoring it, which never materialized.

It is humbling to see this 115-year old pipe organ will continue to lead and inspire worship for decades to come. On behalf of all my colleagues at Casavant, I want to express our sincere appreciation to South Congregational Church for providing a new home to this historically significant Casavant organ. I want to convey heartfelt thanks to our colleagues at Messrs. Czelusniak et Dugal for the respectful and careful restoration they just completed. It is our hope this instrument will not only serve this congregation but also will become a tool for outreach to the entire Amherst community.

The pipe organ was a gift to the church in 1914, from Andrew Carnegie Foundation and replaced a two-manual Wm. A. Johnson tracker moved to its third home in the Congregational Church, Heath, Massachusetts, where it remains in service today.
